Hong Kong, 1st November, 1899.

Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your despatch No.197 of the 15th September, in which you ask for further explanations with regard to the proposal contained in my despatch No.101 of April 24th, that supplies of subsidiary silver coin should in future be executed in India.

1st October 1899.

2. I now enclose a copy of a Report by the Colonial Treasurer, who has consulted on this matter the Chief Manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. It will be seen from this Report that the Treasurer is of opinion that the system proposed of obtaining supplies of subsidiary coins from India would work better than that now in force.

For Maron Finance

7th

1899.

3. With regard to the last part of the 3rd paragraph of your despatch I enclose a copy of a letter from the Finance and Commerce Department of the Indian Government, dated 18th March, and have the honour to refer you more particularly to the 2nd paragraph thereof.

The Right Honourable

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble Servant,

HENRY ARTHUR BLAKE
